Joe Biden: Daily Routine

On Daily Routines, we profile successful leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, executives and athletes to explore their routines, schedules, habits and day in the life.

“It feels like I am going home,” Joe Biden told reporters as he entered the White House on Inauguration Day. While he’s only a few months into his presidency, Biden has been a part of the American political history ever since he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972 At 29 years old, he was the sixth-youngest senator in American history.

Since then, he’s been reelected to the Senate six times; served as Barack Obama’s Vice President over his two terms; and campaigned for the presidency three times, before assuming the top job as the 46th President of the United States.

In his new role, Biden’s new daily routine isn’t all that different from when he was campaigning to become the most powerful man in the world. A 2020 profile in The New York Times described Biden’s morning and evening routine during his presidential campaign:

Joseph R. Biden Jr. usually rises before 8 a.m. at his home in Wilmington, Del., and starts his day with a workout in an upstairs gym that contains a Peloton bike, weights and a treadmill. He often enjoys a protein shake for breakfast and puts on a suit or blazer much of the time. In the evenings, he and his wife, Jill, sit down together for dinner, a ritual that was absent for much of the last frenzied year on the campaign trail.

As President, Biden has established a regular daily routine. According to CNN, President Biden begins his day with coffee with the First Lady before heading into the Oval Office for meetings and phone calls just after 9am.

According to an article in People, detailing Biden’s first month into the job; he and his VP Kamala Harris have spent the past few weeks reaching out to world leaders — “The two have spoken with U.S. allies like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron as well as leaders who have more contentious relationships with the U.S., such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese Xi Jinping.”

The pair have also been receiving daily security briefings every morning. Such briefings, and other meetings with staff members have been done via a combination of in-person and video conference due to COVID-19.

Unlike his predecessor and friend, Barack Obama, who preferred working into the late hours of the night, Biden is usually back at the White House residence by 7pm.

When it comes to his health and diet, Biden famously declared in 2016, “My name is Joe Biden, and I love ice cream. You all think I’m kidding — I’m not. I eat more ice cream than three other people you’d like to be with, all at once.”

He also likes to indulge in other junk food. A 2012 report by the Washington Examiner revealed Biden “consumed an ungodly amount of junk food,” during President Obama’s re-election campaign across the country. From hot dogs, pizzas and ice cream to peach pies, cheesecake, and spaghetti, Biden didn’t hold back on the junk food. The only thing he doesn’t consume is alcohol — “there are enough alcoholics in my family,” he told The New York Times.
