Rand Fishkin: Daily Routine

On Daily Routines, we profile successful leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, executives and athletes to explore their routines, schedules, habits and day in the life.

If you’re involved in the world of SEO, content or digital marketing, there’s no doubt that you’re familiar with Rand Fishkin’s work as the Co-Founder and former CEO of Moz, and his latest venture, market research and audience intelligence tool SparkToro.

In the world of startups and VC funding, Rand is a breath of a fresh, transparent air, who has provided readers with the nitty gritty details of life as a startup founder in his blog writings, as well as his book, Lost and Founder: A Painfully Honest Field Guide to the Startup World.

Writing has always been cathartic for me, and sharing these stories will, I hope, exorcise some of the difficult and emotional experiences that accompany an entrepreneurial journey (especially one as fraught with missteps as mine was)

Interview with Rand Fishkin – Two Decades of SEO | SEOlium

Balance the Grind had the opportunity to have a quick chat with Rand about his daily routine, as he’s working on building SparkToro.

On a typical day, Rand will wake up naturally, between 9-9.30am, “I’m a horrific night owl.” If he has a morning meeting or call, he’ll use an alarm clock.

First thing on his list (besides coffee) is always physical therapy exercises, “I’ve got degenerative disc disease, sadly, but physical therapy helps stave off the worst of it (I also try to sit very little, use lumbar support when I do, have a standing desk, take walks, keep my weight down, etc.).”

From there, Rand will settle into his day as the CEO of SParkToro where he heads up product vision, marketing and fundraising.

It’s usually a few hours of calls, webinars, podcasts, demos, business discussions, and/or more informal catch-ups in the morning to midday, then a lot of email and task list items (most often writing, some design or UX work, helping folks use their SparkToro accounts, marketing for the company, etc.)

As a way to relax and recharge, Rand will often go out to dinner with friends, or host a dinner party (pre-pandemic). These days he’ll catch up on TV shows with his wife Geraldine, before heading off to bed between 1-1.30am.
