Join me as we dive into the nuances of ratios, ingredients, and garnishes that will take your gin and tonic from good to unforgettable.
- Master the Ratio
The golden rule for a perfect G&T is a 1:3 ratio—one part gin to three parts tonic water. This balance allows the botanicals in the gin to shine while keeping the drink refreshing. For those new to gin, start with a lighter 1:4 ratio. If you’re a seasoned gin enthusiast, a 1:2 ratio will give your gin a stronger, more pronounced flavour. And match your gin with right tonic examples based on their aromas examples (mediterranean – indian – aegean). - Choose Quality Ingredients
A good gin and tonic is only as great as its ingredients. Opt for a premium Australian gin with complex botanicals, and pair it with a high-quality tonic water. Avoid overly sweet or artificial tonics; instead, look for tonics that enhance, not overpower, your gin’s character. - Ice, Ice, Baby
Use plenty of ice! Fill your glass to the brim with large ice cubes to keep your drink chilled without watering it down. Smaller cubes melt faster, diluting the flavours before you’ve had the chance to enjoy them at their best. - Garnish for an Extra Burst of Flavour
Enhance your G&T by adding a garnish that complements the botanicals in your gin. Start by looking at the flavours mentioned on the label. Citrus fruits like lemon, lime, or grapefruit work well with most gins. For a more adventurous twist, try herbs like rosemary, thyme, or a sprig of mint. If you’re using a fruity gin, fresh berries or a slice of cucumber can add a refreshing element. To take it up a notch, you can even make garnish-infused large ice cubes, which adds a fresh layer of flavour to your G&T! - Keep It Crisp and Fizzy
Pour the tonic slowly to preserve its effervescence. The bubbles help to enhance the aroma and flavours of the gin, creating a lively and refreshing drink. Always opt for freshly opened tonic water for the best results, stir a drink before tasting to combine both flavours together
