Fix Your Leaky Gut: Foods to Eliminate from Your Diet

Living with a leaky gut can be challenging, but knowing which foods to avoid can make a big difference in managing your symptoms and improving your overall health.

Leaky gut, or increased intestinal permeability, happens when the lining of your small intestine gets damaged, allowing undigested food particles and toxins to “leak” through the intestinal wall into your bloodstream. 

This can lead to inflammation and a host of other health issues. Fortunately, by making some dietary adjustments, you can help your gut heal and feel better. Let’s explore the top foods to avoid if you have a leaky gut.

Processed Foods and Sugars

One of the biggest culprits for leaky gut is processed foods. These foods are often loaded with additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients that can irritate your gut lining. Foods like chips, cookies, and frozen meals might be convenient, but they can wreak havoc on your digestive system. High-sugar foods are also problematic because they feed harmful bacteria and yeast in your gut, contributing to an imbalance in your microbiome. This imbalance can worsen leaky gut symptoms.

Instead, focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods. Fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains provide the nutrients your body needs without the harmful additives.

Gluten and Grains

For many people with leaky gut, gluten is a major trigger. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. It can cause inflammation in the gut, especially for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Even if you don’t have a diagnosed gluten intolerance, you might find that avoiding gluten helps reduce your leaky gut symptoms.

Along with gluten, some grains can also be problematic due to their high lectin content. Dairy Products

Refined Oils and Trans Fats

These unhealthy fats are often used in fried foods, margarine, and baked goods. Trans fats, in particular, have been shown to increase inflammation and negatively affect gut health.

Opt for healthier fats like olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil, which provide essential fatty acids and support overall health. Including omega-3 fatty acids from sources like fish, flaxseeds, and chia seeds can also help reduce inflammation and promote gut healing.

Artificial Sweeteners

While it might seem like a good idea to switch to artificial sweeteners to avoid sugar, these substitutes can also be problematic for gut health. Some artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame and sucralose, have been shown to disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the gut and increase inflammation.

Natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, and stevia can be better alternatives, but it’s still important to use them in moderation. Reducing your overall intake of sweeteners, whether artificial or natural, can help improve your gut health.
