Balancing the Grind with Alex Millar, Co-Founder & CEO of Hudled

1) To kick things off, could you tell us a little about your career background and current role?

Hi everyone, I’m Alex, co-founder and CEO of Hudled. We’re a SaaS manager powered by employee engagement. I’ve spent the last 6 years working in the startup space.

I previously co-founded Littlehubs which was a childcare tech platform which is in the process of being acquired. In school I studied accounting and law but nowadays, I see myself working across finance, sales and marketing.

2) What does a day in the life look like for you? Can you take us through a recent workday?

5am: Wake up – I’ve been training at a Crossfit gym the last couple years and absolutely love it.

8:30am: Start work either at our co-working space Fishburners or at home (3 at home, 2 in office).

12-1pm: Try and get out of the house.

5:00pm: Daily standup with the team from Europe.

5:15-8:00pm: Available for calls with the team

There are some shortcomings to having a remote team in Europe, we do need to be available for some evening calls (but not every night). The upside though is we have the flexibility to start work later. The problem is, I wake up so early so I generally take my break in the middle of the day.

3) Does your current role allow for flexible or remote working? If so, how does that fit into your life and routine?

Our team is remote first, we have 8 employees across 4 continents. We’ve had to create processes to give each team visibility:

Daily update in Slack: 

  • Did you achieve what you wanted to do yesterday?
  • What are you committing to get done today?
  • Have you updated Airtable/Hubspot?
  • Are you blocked on anything?
  • How busy do you feel for the next 3 days?

Daily stand-up on Google Meet: What did you do today (Sydney team) and what are you going to do (Europe team).

Weekly check-ins with 15Five (company-wide).

By having this type of process, it gives us a lot of flexibility to scale without having a physical office. 

4) What does work-life balance mean to you and how do you work to achieve that goal?

Work-life balance for me is doing everything I want without having regrets. Santi and I have built a remote first company, so we have the flexibility to travel and be based out of Europe, South America or wherever we want to. Everything we do now is to set Hudled up to enable this life.

5) In the past 12 months, have you started or stopped any routines or habits to change your life?

I’ve started playing tennis again. I played a lot growing up competitively and due to injuries I stopped. I love the competition and grind of tennis, so I’m hoping to get back into it this year

6) Do you have any favourite books, podcasts or newsletters that you’d like to recommend?

Podcasts: This Week in Startups and the All-In Podcast are my two favourites right now.

7) Are there any products, gadgets or apps that you can’t live without?

I bought a Whoop band and I’m obsessed with the stats – especially the sleep tracking

8) If you could read an interview about work-life balance by anyone, who would that be?  

Tim Ferriss. The 4-Hour Workweek was my first “business” book that I remember reading. I also quite like Mr Money Moustache.

9) Do you have any last thoughts on work, life or balance that you’d like to share with our readers?

Ultimately I believe people spend time on things that they love.
