Balancing the Grind With Dave Reimherr, Founder & CEO at Magnificent Marketing

1) To kick things off, could you tell us a little about your background and career?

My career in sales and marketing began when I was in college as an advertising sales rep for a regional student publication.

I ended up having enough success here that the owner of the company asked me to come back and head up the sales and marketing for a publication printing company that he was starting.

The reality of the situation that I was a 23 your old, inexperienced (and cheap) VP of Sales and Marketing of one, with that one being myself.

Fast forward 17 years later and after a crash course from the school of hard knocks, and we had grown that publication printing company to one of the two largest companies in the San Antonio area.

But I always had the urge to start my own thing and develop a culture and company in my and my partners vision so we ended up breaking off to form Magnificent Marketing in June of 2015.

2) What is your current role and what does it entail on a day to day basis?

My position is Founder and CEO and I do wear a variety of hats, but my main role in the company is to brand ourselves and be the lead on bringing in new business.

I am a part of the strategy creation as well as working with my partner/COO to iron our our processes and manage the team. It is a bit of a challenge to have to shift gears so often, but that is the nature of the entrepreneur beast.

3) What does a typical day in the life look like for you? Can you take us through a recent workday?

My days begin by reading a list of positive affirmations that I wrote in the back of ‘The Motivation Manifesto’. I then move on to a 20 minute mediation and a routine of light stretches and push ups.

As for the push-ups, I do one for the age that I am so I go up by one as I get older. I don’t want to decline as I get older and this is a slight reminder that I will continue to improve as I age.

I then get to work and my work days are not very typical as they are dictated by the meetings I have scheduled or not.

One main part of my day that I highly encourage others to do, is to take a break after lunch to go on a 20 minute walk to clear my head. I can not emphasize enough how much this has helped with managing stress.

I have tried over the years to evolve into a much more balanced life so I do try to end my work around 6:30 or 7 pm (trying to lower this as I go) and move on to family time with my amazing dogs and beautiful wife.

I sometimes will also try to go on one more walk with one my pups but this is sorta more for her than me.

4) Do you have any tips, tricks or shortcuts to help you manage your workload and schedule?

The best tip I can give that will free up some time is to batch your tasks, especially email replies. If you batch this activity at the beginning and end of each day, you will find a ton of time in your days.

5) In between your job, life and all your other responsibilities, how do you ensure you find some sort of balance in your life?

I mainly try to find balance by incorporating the breaks into my daily life. I also have a few on-going meet-ups with friend to stay active such as my super social volleyball league (2 time champs!) and a weekly weekend meet-up to play basketball.

I am not a big gym person or runner, so I try to stay in shape and active by playing and it also helps me continue to feel young. I also have various yearly meet-ups with friends such as tailgating parties, yearly golf tourney, yearly music camping trips etc.

You sorta need to plan out to stay connected with all the beautiful friends made at different stages of life so I do make that effort. And then on a weekly or monthly basis, I try to stay connected as much as possibly with our buddies as things come up.

With all this being said, I love spending time with just myself and my wife and dogs so you will definitely catch us binge watching Netflix or one of our guilty Bravo reality shows.

6) What does work life balance mean to you?

Where you position yourself to enjoy both your work and your life.

I won’t pretend to act like I have it all figured out, but a great work life balance to me means that I am excited about all of it and I have great energy all around me no matter what I am doing.

So best not to bring work irritations home and make sure that you always remember where your true happiness comes from.

7) What do you think are some of the best habits you’ve developed over the years to help you strive for success and balance?

My morning routines as well as my lunch walks. Keeping up with having these stop gaps to not allow my brain to get too busy has been an absolute life saver for me.

I also have gotten a bit better about just giving myself at least one of the weekend days to simply unplug and not worry about work.

In the past, even when I wasn’t working, my mind was stressing about what I should or could be doing and I ruined my free time.

It’s sorta like mind jail and it’s horrible. Again, not saying I am where I want to be, but I have started a habit of just chilling out and allowing life to be lived w/o thinking about other stuff.

9) What is the number one thing you do to make sure you get the most out of your day?

Organizing my week ahead of time as well as making space to work on creative and higher intense thinking. Also, the email tip stated above I live and die by.

10) Do you have any last thoughts on work, life or balance that you’d like to share with our readers?

That inch by inch is a cinch and by the yard is hard. I know it’s cliche, but it’s really the only way. Just keep going bit by bit.

Also, know that we are not alone. I have had so many ups and downs in my professional career and still to this day, doubt myself sometimes.

But the more I interact with other entrepreneurs who appear to have it all down, the more I see that our journeys of excitement, happiness, struggle, doubt, fear, confidence, success are all so similar.

The beauty is in the journey and not the destination and we all have the power to persevere and succeed.

So if it feels like you just don’t have what it takes, you are most likely just in that part of your story because 99.9% of everyone else has or is experiencing the same challenges.

Just take every challenge as a lesson and opportunity to get better and become that more valuable to world. This mindset shift is a game changer We can do it. We all can.
