With over three decades of experience in wellness, retail, and brand development, Marg James has seen the health industry shift and evolve — and she’s helped shape it along the way. As the founder of Healthy Trim, Marg set out to fill a clear gap in the market: genuinely nutritious, high-quality meal replacements that support busy lives without sacrificing health.
In this interview, she shares how her personal philosophy around wellbeing has changed over the years, the habits that keep her grounded as a founder, and what it really takes to build a wellness brand with both passion and proof.
You’ve been in the wellness industry for over three decades—how has your own definition of health and balance evolved over the years?
After decades in the wellness space, my definition of health has shifted from chasing perfection to embracing progress and balance. These days, I believe true wellbeing is about feeling good in your body, staying connected to your purpose, and being kind to yourself along the way.
Health isn’t one-size-fits-all—it looks and feels different for everyone. For me, it’s about creating a sustainable rhythm where your mind, body and soul work in harmony. Realistic expectations and small, consistent choices are what ultimately keep you well in the long run.
What does a typical day look like for you now, and how do you prioritise your own wellbeing while running a fast-moving business like Healthy Trim?
No two days are the same when you’re running a growing business, but I always start early to create space for clarity. Movement is non-negotiable—even a brisk walk helps me centre myself. Most mornings, I’ll have a Healthy Trim smoothie bowl or a quick shake—something nourishing and easy to fit into a busy schedule.
From there, it’s into the day: meetings, product development, checking in with our team, and staying close to our community. As I’ve gotten older (and hopefully a little wiser), I’ve learned to be far more intentional about my wellbeing. It’s not about rigid routines—it’s about making the small habits count.
You founded your first business at 20—what key routines or habits have helped you stay resilient and energised through the highs and lows of entrepreneurship?
Starting my first business at 20 taught me that resilience doesn’t mean avoiding challenges—it means learning how to move through them. Over the years, I’ve learned the importance of stepping back to reflect, especially when things feel overwhelming.
Having simple, consistent habits—like taking breaks, checking in with myself, and sticking to my non-negotiables—helps me stay grounded. Business can be unpredictable, but how you show up for yourself matters. Staying energised and clear-headed allows me to lead with intention, push through the hard days, and stay connected to the reason I started in the first place.
What was the biggest gap you saw in the nutrition space that led to the creation of Healthy Trim, and how did you go about solving it?
What stood out to me was the lack of premium, genuinely nourishing meal replacement options. Most products on the market were packed with sugar, artificial ingredients, or low-grade protein—and didn’t offer complete nutrition. I knew we could do better. Healthy Trim was created to offer something smarter and more supportive: a shake that’s convenient, complete, and actually good for you. From formulation to final flavour, I worked closely with food scientists to ensure each ingredient serves a purpose—no fillers, just real nourishment. The goal was always to create something I’d use myself and proudly share with others.
Wellness founders can often push themselves too hard—how do you personally manage stress and avoid burnout, especially after so many years in the industry?
It’s easy to get caught up in the push for perfection—especially when you care deeply about what you’re building. But over time, I’ve learned that managing stress starts with setting clear boundaries and honouring them. Burnout doesn’t happen overnight—it creeps in when we ignore our own signals.
For me, it’s about listening to my body, making space to pause, and giving myself permission to step back when needed. A positive mindset helps, but so does perspective. Strength doesn’t mean pushing through at all costs—it means knowing when to rest, reset, and come back stronger.
What advice would you give to someone looking to build a health brand that’s grounded in both personal passion and scientific credibility?
Start with heart, but lead with evidence. Passion will give your brand soul—but credibility will earn trust. When I launched Healthy Trim, I knew I needed both. I worked closely with food scientists to ensure every ingredient had a purpose, not just a trend appeal. Consumers are smarter than ever—they want transparency, they want results, and they want to know you’ve done the work. Build your brand around something meaningful. Stay curious. Surround yourself with experts. And always come back to your ‘why’. The most impactful health brands are the ones that blend purpose with proof—and keep learning as they grow.
