Balancing the Grind with Roberto Damante, Content & Marketing Lead at Pinstripe Media

1) To kick things off, could you tell us a little about your career background and current role?

I am currently the content and marketing lead for Pinstripe Media. I really appreciate the diversity In the role as it brings together a culmination of experience across audio and tv production, marketing, PR, events, and the full suite of content initiatives.

Over the last 15 years, I have worked in-house and consulting but I am pretty dynamic and passionate about my projects – whether that is working for a brand or with a range of clients. 

2) What does a day in your life look like for you? Can you take us through a recent workday?

I am a professional troubleshooter so there are always elements of being proactive and reactive to client needs – so my day always starts by assessing the media landscape and sourcing any opportunities.

I enjoy the time to myself before 9 am and after 6 pm where I get time to ‘play’ with ideas and things about clients’ needs from a different perspective. I like to structure my day with meetings so I have check-ins on projects throughout the day, and in between those, I balance the day with time set aside for certain tasks.

I find that starting the day with cardio or finishing the day with a weights workout helps bring my mind into focus at work too – and a much-needed release of all energy and emotions while listening to podcasts. Even while working, I usually have talkback radio or music which helps me get in my flow. 

3) Does your current role allow for flexible or remote working? If so, how does that fit into your life and routine? 

Working from home has changed my work, hobbies, mood, and relationships – I am incredibly grateful that the world slowed down which gave me breathing space in lots of ways.

While I enjoy being collaborative and social, I also need time to listen to my music and get lost in my work – I enjoy organising things and seeing things take form; I painstakingly labour for far too long over writing anything which requires my utmost focus; and I appreciate taking calls with clients in the silence of my own home without feeling like colleagues are listening.

The little things that I enjoy about working from home means that I am more productive and have much more time to teach yoga, create my own passion projects, and fill up my own cup! I can’t commit to office hours or days – the thought makes me anxious enough so I rather show up when I have the energy to be around the team.

The best thing about it is: I stopped using the alarm! Some days I wake up at 5am, and some days I wake up at 8am – and I love that I have that freedom now.

4) What does work-life balance mean to you and how do you work to achieve that goal?

It is Incredibly important for me to integrate work into my life – and not the other way around as it once was for my mother’s generation. Growing up with a single mother who travelled for 4 hours a day to and from work was truly exhausting for her and not the quality of life I wanted.

I know I am incredibly fortunate to be part of a generation that can choose to work remotely but it means a great deal to me. Nobody wants to burn out or carry resentment, so having some clear boundaries about what I am willing to offer helps create balance. I have often worked for free to help others and that Is one thing that I have been trying to work on – to value my time more! 

5) In the past 12 months, have you started or stopped any routines or habits to change your life? 

I used to practice yoga every single day but stopped practising as regularly – which ironically created more balance! I love the feeling of not waking up to an alarm every single day! I ride my bike everywhere which makes transit such a dream on sunny days.

6) Do you have any favourite books, podcasts or newsletters that you’d like to recommend?

My favourite podcast is ‘Heavyweight’. I also enjoy true crime podcasts, and a fantastic laugh is ‘Smartless’. Reading What makes us tick‘ at the moment, just finished re-reading The Game Changer, I am enjoying The Storyteller autobiography by Dave Grohl, and I just got a bunch of plays delivered so looking forward to re-reading a play called Beyond Therapy – a really funny play that I think would be great to perform! 

7) Are there any products, gadgets or apps that you can’t live without?

Recently bought an iPad and, honestly, i don’t know what took me so long because it does come in handy! I don’t love material possessions so much but I have some great camera and recording gear that I enjoy playing with.

I do enjoy Twitter as the only social media app because I find the conversations and ideas on that platform have to be pithy so usually very considered. I have lots of apps to keep across news and crypto too. 

8) If you could read an interview about work-life balance by anyone, who would that be?  

Beyonce. I mean, honestly. 

9) Do you have any last thoughts on work, life or balance that you’d like to share with our readers?

I really believe balance means coming back to your values, finding something to keep grounded, and creating a life where you enjoy the work so you don’t feel the need to escape it.

Something that always stayed with me from studying philosophy in high school was the idea around Aristotle’s Golden Mean. I think about that all the time and how important that is in every aspect of life.

I studied yoga and meditation over the last ten years because I was interested in exploring myself deeper while also unlocking tools for quieting the mind – I think the important thing to remember is that sometimes in the process of finding balance, you will feel incredibly unbalanced along the way,.and that’s ok too!
