In this edition of Workflow, we have Stuart Hipwell, Creative Director and Partner at Mindjam, talking about working from home in his cartooning studio.
Workflow is an interview series by Balance the Grind to get a glimpse into people’s working styles and workspaces. If you’re interested in sharing your workflow, submit it here!
Describe what you do: I’m the Creative Director and Partner of integrated creative agency Mindjam. Outside of that I’m an award winning Graphic Novelist.
How do you like your coffee: Flat white, Almond Milk Lab with no sugar.
Device(s) you use: 15″ MacBook Pro and a Wacom 27QHD Touch.
Describe your working style in one sentence: Deadlines obviously sets our agendas, but left to my own devices I’m most productive and creative in the mornings. That said, I love reading new briefs (especially the meaty ones) and strategising in mid afternoons with an afternoon coffee. I feel that’s when I go deeper.

What does your workspace look like: Since the COVID-19 restrictions, I’m working from home in my cartooning studio which is a stand-alone cabin at the back of my property. It’s a beautiful space with lots of wildlife, views of the ocean and separated from my home life.
My desk setup consists of my MacBook Pro and Wacom Cintiq 27QHD Touch. Most importantly I’m surrounded by lots of things that brings me joy such as graphic novels, animation toys and Star Wars Lego! I do still work though, I promise!
Do you have a favourite playlist for work: Normally something chilled like Jack Johnson, Pete Murray, Vance Joy.
Who would you like to nominate for the next workflow interview: My business partner Luke Hill.
