In this edition of Workflow, we have David Kadavy, bestselling author of The Heart to Start and Design for Hackers, and podcast host of Love Your Work.

Describe what you do: I write books, including The Heart to Start, Design for Hackers, and Mind Management, Not Time Management. I also host the Love Your Work podcast.

How do you like your coffee: I don’t drink coffee.

Device(s) you use: iPad Air w/ Plugable external keyboard, 9″ x 12″ whiteboards, AlphaSmart NEO, iPhone SE, Moleskine Classic notebook, Moleskine Volant notebook, & a 2015 MacBook Pro.

Describe your working style in one sentence: I choose the tool that suits my thinking, rather than let my thinking be shaped by the tool.

What does your workspace look like: I just got my first unfurnished apartment in Colombia, just in time for mandatory lockdown, so it’s very sparse. But, I mix things up. I have a standing/sitting desk, a custom-made wooden dining table, and a hammock.

How does your workspace affect your creative process: I adjust where I work and what tool I use according to my mental state, and where I am in the process. Dim lighting on an iPad, for most writing. Laid back in the hammock with my AlphaSmart for big-picture brainstorming.

Do you have a favourite playlist for work: I don’t usually listen to music while I work. On the contrary, I often wear earplugs.

Who would you like to nominate for the next workflow interview: Phil Thompson from Cape Horn Illustration.
