In this edition of Workflow, we have Oliver Gaywood, Senior Editor at Civic Web Media, talking going through phases with his coffee, and working best in short blocks.
We’re looking to partner with companies that share our passion to promote healthy work-life balance around the world. Get in touch with us!
Describe what you do: I play with words, build compelling copy and help businesses communicate with their clients – I’m a writer, editor and proofreader. I also dabble a little with WordPress sites and social media campaigns. I’m also a husband, father and the general manager of a co-working space, The Roost.
How do you like your coffee: I go through phases. Strong and black (normally when I’m meeting a friend for a chat) or milky if it’s the first of the day.
Device(s) you use: Most of my work is done on a Dell laptop, which I chose based on a few deciding factors like it having a numpad. I have a desktop in my home office too and try not to spend too much time on my S7.
Describe your working style in one sentence: I work best in short blocks with plenty of screen breaks (preferably by a kettle) in between.

What does your workspace look like: Cluttered, which is the sign of a busy person, right? I normally write from a co-working space which has a great culture and artistic vibe. My desk has a couple of monitors, a heavily punished keyboard and a spread of papers filled with lists, ideas and proofed copy. Since COVID-19 came around, I’ve been using my home office a lot more which is a bit smaller, a lot lonelier but just as messy.
How does your workspace affect your creative process: Although I’ve been doing okay working from home, I much prefer the social aspects of an office. When I worked in agencies I always thought a home office was the dream, but when I first tried that I found myself isolated and lonely.
Signing up to a co-working space has been great for many reasons — I feel more productive when I see others working hard, I can bounce ideas off people and get unofficial mentoring from peers.
Do you have a favourite playlist for work: I’m of the generation that listens to albums rather than playlists. Recently, that’s been a lot of Frank Turner, Onsind and The Menzingers.
Who would you like to nominate for the next workflow interview: Creative genius Myf Garven.
