In this edition of Workflow, we have Richard Laycock, a New York-based Insights Editor at Finder.com, talking to us about his rooftop desk overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
Workflow is an interview series by Balance the Grind to get a glimpse into people’s working styles and workspaces. If you’re interested in sharing your workflow, submit it here!
Describe what you do: I work with our global PR team and together we create campaigns that help Finder establish a presence in new markets. My day-to-day work never really looks the same, one day I’m scraping a site for interesting data, the next I’m working on an analysis piece based on a survey we’ve conducted. And because I’m part of a global team, the country of focus changes too from the US to Canada to Mexico, wherever. It’s great to have such a variety.
How do you like your coffee: An espresso to start the day and then a handful of cups of cold brew.
Device(s) you use: I use a Macbook Pro, which until the lockdown, would be connected to an additional monitor (Acer I think).
Describe your working style in one sentence: Frenetic — I work in bursts bouncing from one task to the next.
What does your workspace look like: Since I can’t go into the office right now, I’ve commandeered our kitchen bench and turned it into a makeshift standing desk. I move between there, the couch, the beanbag and (on nicer days) the roof, where I set up a desk looking at the Manhattan skyline.
How does your workspace affect your creative process: I really like to stand when I’m writing as it helps me think: if I get stuck on idea I’ll bounce around on the anti-fatigue or pace back-and-forth.
Do you have a favourite playlist for work: It depends what I’m working on. If I’m doing something like research or spreadsheet work, I’ll listen to my Discover Weekly or Release Radar on Spotify. If I need to focus on something I’m writing I either listen to Rain Sounds playlists or some Chopin.
Who would you like to nominate for the next workflow interview: Zak Ali.
